Chanel Classic Flap

In 1950, Coco Chanel created an innovative design that sat on the shoulder rather than needing to be held because it conveniently allowed for a hands-free experience. Karl Lagerfeld then became the creative force that continued to push the fashion house forward after the passing of Coco, resulting in his interpretation of her original design - the Chanel Classic Flap!

About Chanel

Founded by Gabrielle Chanel at the beginning of the last century, CHANEL offers a broad range of high-end creations, including Ready-to-Wear, Leather Goods, Fashion Accessories, Eyewear, Fragrances, Makeup, Skincare, Jewelry and Watches. CHANEL is also renowned for its Haute Couture collections, presented twice yearly in Paris, and for having acquired a large number of specialized suppliers, collectively known as the Métiers d’Art. Chanel is dedicated to ultimate luxury and to the highest level of craftsmanship.

Leather, Skins, & Material

The Chanel Classic Flap is available in two quilting styles: the iconic classic diamond quilt and the chevron quilt. In addition to the type of quilting, the Classic Flap is available in a wide variety of leathers and materials with Caviar leather (grained calfskin) and Lambskin (buttery smooth leather) as Chanel’s two most popular leathers. Other leathers used include Patent leather, Glazed calfskin and Goatskin. Those hoping to make a bold and colorful statement may opt for an Iridescent Classic Flap or Classic Flap Métiers D’art - an elaborately embellished and handmade version of this closet staple. Both of these variations are considered special edition and are made in smaller quantities.

If you’re looking for a variation more exotic and exclusive may find the Classic Flap in Ostrich, Python, Alligator and Crocodile skins. However, the use of these exotic skins has been discontinued since 2018, resulting in a spike in resale prices.

History of the Classic Flap

The quilted pattern was inspired by Coco’s love for fashion in the context of horse riding, specifically emphasizing on boys who worked at the stables, although over the years the brand has also adopted a chevron pattern.

The updated interpretation of the purse includes the infamous CC lock and the leather-woven chain to which are now used as the brand’s signature motif season after season. As a way to pay homage to Coco Chanel, all flap bags contain an oddly placed hidden zipper compartment, initially designed by Coco to serve the purpose of stowing away her intimate love letters.
