👋Hi everyone, it’s Angel again. Welcome to this week's members-only edition of Ban Island’s Collection Guide.

👉In the last two weeks, we’ve published the Hermes Birkin & Kelly Collection Reports  (Miss them? Catch up on those now)

From there, I’ve received a lot of questions about Noir, the classic Black. So today, we will dive deep into the Hermes color Noir, and give you an even deeper insight with a breakdown of other bag styles and leather types from this popular color.

We have scanned the internet far and wide, and found 800+ Hermès bags in the preloved world that are black in color. Here's the breakdown to give you their availability and collection alue price based on the different styles, sizes and hardware.

Send me your questions, join our Facebook Group, and I’ll humbly offer actionable handbag buying and selling insight and advice.

Hermès Black Bags Collection Value & Availability Breakdown

1. You’ve asked for this, so here’s the answer! What are the actual collection value prices of Black Hermès bags in various different styles and leathers types?

We excluded the lowest and highest price outliers, and averaged out all the actual listing prices for each style, size and leather in Noir.

Keep in mind we only accounted for bags that are in new or excellent condition. (As always, all currencies are in USD).

🤩Haven’t heard of Madame Calfskin?

This leather is one of Hermès’ most recent offerings and is typically used to craft SLGs. A Birkin made from Madame Calfskin seems to be a rare gem, and it’s high collection value reflects that.

🍊Vintage Hermès lovers, we didn’t forget about you! Ardenne and Box leather are most commonly used on vintage Hermès bags hence the lower collection value.

Seems like Hermès fans prefer the classic square silhouette of the Constance 18, 24 and 29, rather than the rectangular shape of the Constance 25 Elan.

Note: Constance 14 seems to be quite rare on the preloved market. Because of that, it did not make good comparisons for this analysis.

And I got this super hard-to-find bag strap to jazz her up a bit

Unlike other Hermès bags where larger size plummets in collection value and shows this reverse curve, the Evelyne seems to scale up in value proportionately based on size and retail price. 👀

Mini Lindy follows the same collection value trajectory as the Birkin, Kelly Sellier and Kelly Retourne where the mini size has this huge collection profit margin while any other larger size actually loses its value.

2. How available are the different Hermès Leather types in Noir?

We analyzed all of the available or sold bags on the collection market, and here’s the actual amount of bags in black that we can find.

Note: A few of the leather types in Noir are few and far between, and because of that they did not make for good comparisons for our collection value analysis.

Togo is the most available leather type for Noir Birkin Bags with 80 bags total, followed by Epsom.

Tadelakt is another uncommon Hermès leather type you may have never heard of.

Tadelakt leather is much softer than box calf with no visible grains. This leather looks so smooth, I, along with many other Hermès lovers, find it hard to believe it’s actually leather at all!

As pointed out by one of our Facebook group members, Box leather is surprisingly quite common - just second to Epsom leather with 35 bags.

Epsom is the most common leather type for an Hermès Noir Constance.

Everytime we do a deep dive, I never fail to learn something new. Grained Monsieur is a leather type I am fairly unfamiliar with. Here are some new insights I learned:

Grained Monsieur AKA Veau Monsieur
  • A hybrid of Sombrero and Swift leather
  • Production is very limited meaning this leather is rare (what else is new with Hermès? 😂)
  • The sheen and feel is similar to that of Box leather

In 2020, I got a Birkin 30 in Epsom but found it too stiff and thin. I absolutely LOVE my Birkin 25 in Togo leather! It’s super soft, a bit more slouchy and has this lovely grain.

3. Which Black Hermès bag is most available?

With many Noir Birkins on the market, I’m surprised to see a large amount of Noir Hermès Evelyne bags available.

With a much shorter wait list to purchase, perhaps that’s why Evelyne and Picotin Lock are available with lots of black options.

In terms of sizes, the Evelyne 16 is the most commonly available in Noir, followed by the Evelyne 29 and the Birkin 35.

4. Which hardware color is most commonly paired Noir: Gold, Palladium or Rose Gold?

With classic black, all three hardwares are absolutely gorgeous, and from chatting with my friends it seems like there’s an equal split between Team Palladium vs Team Gold.

Rose gold is so dreamy, but so hard to find. We did not find any brushed hardware or So Black hardware available in the preloved market paired with Noir. I guess it’s snatched up so fast or so rare that we, commoners, just would never see its existence.

Last piece of advice: don’t be discouraged while hunting. I did not think I would ever score Noir with Rose gold, but guess what... Last month I DID!
